It isn't sexy violence.

They don't make movies that make it look heroic.

It doesn't generally make good copy for the evening news - unless it has escalated to homicide.

Rather than being dramatic, it's familiar and sordid.

When we are confronted with it, we turn our eyes away, a sick feeling in the pit of our stomach. Why? Simply put, it's because it's too familiar. Family Violence isn't unusual or unlikely to occur.

Rather, Family Violence is the most pervasive and damaging form of violence in our society.

The statistics are staggering:
  • Eighty-eight Arizonans died in 2002 as result of relationship violence.
  • The FBI reports that 30% of female homicide victims are killed by their boyfriends or husbands, and 6% of male homicide victims are killed by their wives or girlfriends.
  • More than 1,100 children die each year as a result of child abuse, maltreatment, and neglect.
  • Research suggests that wife-beating results in more injuries that require medical treatment than rape, auto accidents, and muggings combined.
  • Abused women comprise 20-26% of women presenting with injury to hospitals.
  • A March of Dimes Study cited domestic violence as the leading cause of birth defects in the United States, more than all other medical causes combined.

There are ways you can help. Be aware. Break the silence. Spread the word.
