In July 1999, NFHC opened its new shelter facility, HALO House, a building specially designed to provide a comfortable and secure haven for both women and children in crisis. This shelter is the only combined domestic violence shelter and children's crisis shelter in Northern Arizona.

The facility has accommodations for 34 women and children in a safe, comfortable environment. In addition, NFHC provides professional counselors to help victims deal with the psychological trauma they have experienced. We also provide help to the victims of family violence to reintegrate into society through our Pathways Program, which supports eligible applicants for 90 days and assists them to find employment and suitable housing.

The quality of the operations of Northland Family Help Center is recognized by experts around the state. NFHC is the recipient of the Office of the Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award for "Distinguished Service to the People of Arizona," as well as the "Organization of the Year," award by the Arizona Daily Sun. In March 2000, auditors from the Governor's Office on Domestic Violence found that NFHC had "model practices" in all 19 areas evaluated, and asked if they could use NFHC programs as examples for other domestic violence agencies. NFHC has worked hard to earn this sterling reputation for innovative, effective programming and financial probity.
