Family Help Center is an amalgamation of three organizations that
began operating in Northern Arizona in 1978:
The Northland Crisis Nursery provided shelter and assistance to
children in crisis.
The Flagstaff Women's Shelter provided shelter and assistance to
women and children escaping domestic violence.
The Center Against Domestic Violence provided education and counseling
for the victims of family violence.
By
the early 1990's these three organizations had joined to become
the Northland Family Help Center. This amalgamated organization
now serves an area of Northern Arizona that stretches from Kingman
to Holbrook, and Page to Cottonwood.
The
quality of the operations of Northland Family Help Center is recognized
by experts around the state. NFHC is the recipient of the Office
of the Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award for "Distinguished
Service to the People of Arizona," as well as the "Organization
of the Year,'"award by the Arizona Daily Sun. In March
2000, auditors from the Governor's Office on Domestic violence found
that NFHC had "model practices" in all 19 areas evaluated,
and asked if they could use NFHC programs as examples for other
domestic violence agencies. NFHC has worked hard to earn this sterling
reputation for innovative, effective programming and financial probity.
Over the years, NFHC has come to recognize the need not only to
treat the symptoms of the family violence problem by providing safe
shelter and counseling for victims, but to also the need to break
the cycle of violence in the community. If we are to reduce the
incidence of family violence in our communities we must intervene
to prevent violence from occurring in the first place. So, in addition
to providing shelter services for the victims of family violence,
we have also developed a prevention program. The objective of the
Prevention Program is to reduce the incidence of family violence
in the communities of Northern Arizona through education, counseling,
and outreach efforts.
NFHC
programs are making a difference in the communities of Northern
Arizona. However, these programs cost money to run. While NFHC does
receive money from government agencies, that funding only covers
70% of NFHC's operating expenses. Thirty percent of NFHC's operating
expenses come from community donations, and as government funding
shrinks, that percentage will have to increase.
