Signs of Child Abuse
Physical Abuse
Accidental Injuries:
- Usually on bony parts of the body, limited to one side.
- Generally, the story is consistent with the injury.
Non Accidental Injuries are:
- Numerous bruises -- on different parts of the body and/or of different ages.
- Bald Patches
- Pattern or Cigarette burns
- Belt or Cord marks
- Slap or grab marks; Human bite marks
- Genital bruising
- Broken bones
Body Marks Mistaken for Abuse:
- Mongolian spots
- Allergic eyes
- Bilateral black eyes
- Bleeding disorders
- Impetigo
Emotional Abuse
May cause behaviors such as:
- Severe anxiety
- Depression
- Withdrawal
- Improper aggressive behavior
These behaviors must be caused by the acts or omissions of the parent or caretaker. A psychiatrist or a psychologist must diagnose emotional abuse.
Neglect
Defined by a lack of necessary food, housing, supervision or medical care. Neglect must be evaluated within the context of cultural standards, which may differ from those prevailing in the community.
Sexual Abuse
Possible Warning signs are:
- Painful urination or itching
- Fear of bathrooms or closed doors
- Bruising in the genital area
- Fear of going home
- Difficulty walking or sitting
- Strange or unpleasant odor
- Nightmares
- Fear of adults
- Public masturbation
- Highly sexualized behaviors
- Sexual knowledge inappropriate to the age
